    2024 50th German Dinner

50 years of remembering our Heritage     Fifty German dinners ago, Bob and his Aunt Okla started a family tradition that has been a blessing to all of us. It has been 50 years of creativity, wonderful food, staying connected,.. and hard work.  And perhaps most importanly, it has helped us remember the blessings we enjoy because Clara and Getchen had the courage and faith to be baptzed in a frozen river February 18, 1904. Hats off to Jamie Smiley and her family, Scott Lifferth, Kelly and to all who made the 50th German Dinner so memorable.       The theme was perfect:  The Butterfly Effect. Our family…

    Artists, Poets and More

One of the first presents that I remember Grandma giving to me was a drawing pad with instruction on how to draw simplified animals and figures. I know she had high hopes. I was always amazed how she could take a blank piece of paper and make it come to life with just a few strokes of her brush.  And Grandpa’s drawing board was such a mystery of lines and charts and numbers.  Both Grandma and Grandpa were remarkably creative and set a pattern for all of us to follow in our own way.  Here are a few things from the attic that remind us of our wonderful heritage…

    1519 Roberta Street

Ha, we are still trying to clean out the attic.  In the process I found several old picture scrap books put together by Grandma Gretchen and my mother Afton.  The pictures are really priceless. But, many of the pictures didn’t have a name on them.  So, I have done my best to identify the people.  Here are some of the pictures.      Just click below the picture to bring up more pictures for the person. Memories of 100 Years Ago – Aunt Charlotte

Day-by-day, it was getting more dangerous to live in the city. Mother put me in the buggy and shouted to dad to grab the half of loaf of dark bread and follow her. That was all the food there was in the house. Mother was running down the street with me in the buggy and as she turned a corner, she was almost bayoneted by a soldier. Father was running behind and instead of the bread; he had grabbed a blanket in his excitement. During the revolution the shelves were bare in the stores and the people suffered greatly from the scarcity of food. Even after the Bolshevik revolution,…
